Overlook was developed in 1996 by Crescent Resources, the real estate arm of Duke Energy, as a way to demonstrate that neighborhood development can successfully co-exist with the valuable natural environment of Mountain Island Lake. The neighborhood was built in several phases, with the initial portion ending at Mountain Cove Dr, followed by Tranquility Dr, then ending at Enchantment Cove Dr, and eventually extending all the way to the lake on Overlook Mountain Dr.

Overlook was annexed by the city of Charlotte in 2003. Before that time it was considered an unincorporated territory of Mecklenburg County
